Training is FREE.  It will be relevant and contemporary in its outlook and provided by professional educators from Alzheimer's Australia WA and Alzheimer's Australia SA, respectively.

 

Details of Course Units and Training Options

CHCAC319A (from Certificate III in Aged Care)

 “Provide support for people living with dementia”

 

Participants completing this unit will recieve an understanding of:

  • Person centred care and effective communication
  • The nature of dementia and its impact
  • Behaviours of concern and effective responses
  • Activities to promote well being; and
  • Workplace issues, community support and services available.
The unit is recognised nationally and a Statement of Attainment will be granted when successfuly completed.
 
Participants can access training through regular scheduled courses at selected venues (including regional locations) in a face to face learning environment. Training is over 3 days.
Option 1 Number of Participants:

Up to 25 in WA

One day p/week over three weeks
(mainly in metropolitan locations)

To assist facilities or organisations with multiple sites and large numbers of staff, provision can be made to deliver training in house for the convenience of staff. Minimum numbers and other conditions apply.

CHCAC416A (from Certificate IV in Aged Care)

 “Facilitate support responsive to the specific nature of dementia”
 
This is a more advanced unit than CHCAC319A and some prior experience in Dementia Care will be neccessary before undertaking this unit which primarily covers knowledge and skills needed to provide guidance and support in implementing care plans for people with dementia in a variety of settings.
 
Training will be delivered on the basis of two days face to face contact, followed by completion of questions and workplace assessment tasks. Duration of the unit will depend largely on the preparation of work by participants and assessment in consultation with the trainer. A scheduled timeframe will be agreed with participants.
 
Pre-course reading of the Participants Manual is essential. In Western Australia a copy of the Participants Manual is sent out when registrations are confirmed with participants. In South Australia, a copy of the manual will be available at registration.
 
Participants completing this unit will be able to:
 
  • Plan support requirements for those with dementia taking into account their care, social and emotional needs
  • Provide guidance and support to care workers in the implementation of care plans
  • Offer guidance and support to family members
  • Develop and implement strategies to minimise behaviours of concern
  • Maintain documentation according to industry and organisational requirements
  • Provide better care as a result of enhanced skills and competence
