 Dementia Care Essentials is a Commonwealth Government
initiative offering nationally recognised dementia care training to aged care
workers throughout Western Australia.
A strategic partnership, that includes ACSWA, McCusker Learning and Development,
Alzheimer’s Australia and ACAA has been formed to successfully deliver Dementia
Care Essentials
As a Commonwealth funded initiative, the Dementia Care Essentials course is
free of charge to eligible care workers in residential, respite and community care services.
Through this training, participants will gain an understanding of:
• Person-centred care and effective communication
• The nature of dementia and its impacts
• Behaviours of concern and effective responses
• Activities to promote well being; and
• Workplace issues, community support and services available
Training will be appropriate, relevant and contemporary in its outlook, and will
be provided by professional dementia educators from Alzheimer’s Australia WA
and McCusker Learning and Development. The course is 3 days duration.
Additional benefits
• The course is nationally recognised. Successful completion results in a
Statement of Attainment for the Unit of Competency “CHCAC15A - Provide care
support which is responsive to the specific nature of dementia ”.
Assessment for this course involves demonstrating competence through written
evidence based on workplace experiences.
• You will be able to meet with and discuss your experiences with colleagues
and others involved in providing care to people with dementia
The Dementia Care Essentials training program has been designed to meet the
needs of aged care providers in both metropolitan and regional areas, and will
be available in a variety of delivery modes to suit the needs of participants.
The program will now continue to operate until June 2010 following an extension granted by the Commonwealth Government. That means well over 1000 aged care workers will have completed the course since it commenced in August 2006.
